Located in the southeast Arabian Peninsula, usually referred to as the Emirates or the UAE, this state is formed by seven emirates. The UAE sits at a critical geographic location, controlling the Strait of Hormuz, an important passageway for oil transit. The discovery of oil in 1966 brought the country wealth. It received the highest score on the Human Development Index among all Arabian Peninsula countries with a GDP per capita exceeding US$31,900. Like Qatar, over 88% of the Emirates’ population are foreigners, over half of these foreign nationals are migrants from South Asian countries like India and Pakistan. Enthusiastically facilitated by the Trump administration, in 2020, the state has become the third Arab country to normalize relations with Israel. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world to date.
