The 6 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle, Rot (25/05/2021) Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Rot (January 1, 2020)

For almost long as we’ve been learning about climate change and how to tackle it, we’ve been encouraged to stick to the “3 R's”: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Reducing what we consume, reusing what we already have and recycling what we no longer need.
But with Earth Overshoot Day 地球超載日 (the day of the year when we as a planet have used all of the earth’s available resources for that year) falling earlier and earlier each year – in 2021, it fell on 29th July – we need to make big changes to reduce the rate at which we consume the earth’s resources.
So, while the 3 R's have been a valuable motto for consuming in a more environmentally-conscious way, the 6 R's go a step further towards living zero-waste to limit our impact on planet earth and its depleting resources.
1. Refuse
The first and most important R is Refuse. This R can be the most difficult to embrace, especially when it challenges habits that we’ve formed over a lifetime.
The most environmentally-friendly resources are the resources never used at all. Say no to freebies, single-use bags, packaging, cups, straws and so on, and get into the habit of bringing along your own reusable replacements.
2. Reduce
The second R is Reduce, reduce the amount you consume. Reduce the number of things you buy and donate/sell items you don’t need or use.
Not only can you reduce your consumption, but you can save time, space and sanity. A quick step to help reduce the things you buy is wait 30 days before buying something new or create household rules like everything has a home or one thing in and one thing out.
Don’t forget to apply the reduce principle to your energy and water consumption.
3. Reuse
The third step of the 6R's is about reusing what you’ve already got rather than buying new items straightaway.
Start to replace disposable with reusable. You have probably done this without even knowing, whether it’s reusing jars or buying second hand. Look for opportunities to extend the life of items or even find a new use
4. Repair
The fourth principle is Repair. When a product breaks down or doesn’t function properly, fix it.
It’s often easy and convenient to just replace something broken. Try and find someone to repair it or learn how to repair it yourself. When shopping, buy items that can be repaired.
5. Recycle
Ultimately, at least some of what we use will need to be thrown away or disposed of, as not everything can be reused or repaired.
It is estimated that roughly 90% of the worldwide plastics in use DO NOT get recycled.
Before throwing anything away to landfill, to see if an item can be recycled. From batteries to bubble wrap, you might be surprised by how much can be recycled.
Since recycling is a process which consumes energy, it’s further down the list of the 6Rs but is still preferable to sending items directly to landfill.
6. Rot
Compost, compost, compost!
Composting food waste is the final stage of the 6R's to prevent any food that you haven’t been able to refuse or reduce going to landfill, where it produces methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) as it decomposes. Instead, composting food scraps turns them into nutrient-rich soil which you can use in your garden to make your plants thrive.

As we move into 2022, make a resolution to start implementing the 6 R’s. Start with picking one item and work towards incorporating more sustainable practices in your day-to-day life. From reducing water consumption, to just saying no to single-use plastics can help make a difference!

Start a Sustainable Lifestyle — I'm being a zero waste beginner for half year.
This is not only the issue of plastic garbage. The most important is the waste of the resource on the earth.

In 2020 the calculated overshoot day fell on August 22 (more than three weeks later than 2019) due to coronavirus induced lockdowns around the world.
The president of the Global Footprint Network claims that the COVID-19 pandemic by itself is one of the manifestations of "ecological imbalance".
